Laurie and I returned late last night from our belated 25th wedding anniversary getaway. We waited three months because we wanted it to be cooler, so we could enjoy the warmth. It worked! Sorry for not having any blog posts, but you understand.
Here are a few observations and reflective thoughts that traveled through my brain these last six days.
- I was surprised and blessed by how many people were shocked that we've been married 25 years. Do we look too young, or are people surprised that couples can actually make it 25 years? Probably the latter.
- Overstated, but true, Laurie is my best friend. We laughed...were silent...watched episodes of 30 Rock...discussed deep issues (even theological ones).
- I read books of those I respect, with similar theology and world views. I took three books along and was very moved.
- I think a great sign of Christian maturity is how often you think about God, His creation, His kingdom, His people and those outside his kingdom. Sadness for those whose world is partying and worldliness.
- Getting away is very important for marriages. It forces you to think about yourself, your selfishness, your future, your areas of hope and concern.
- I enjoyed the freedom of no cell phone or emails. My phone had a connection and my laptop availability, but I chose to abandon both. It was great. I did like having my laptop for videos and internet capability for sports, food and shopping.
- I'm excited about finding a new pace, schedule and format for my life. During this break God taught me things about it through His word and good books.
- It is possible to go on vacation and not gain weight. Laurie and I worked out every day and still ate great, including dessert!
- I thought a lot about Heaven. Partly because of one of the books I read. Partly because of an upcoming message. But also because I had time to think. I believe heaven is closer than we think. I think more of the Kingdom of heaven is already here if we seek it out.
There are some of my thoughts and reflections. Do you have any thoughts or reflections about mine?
p.s. if you were wondering where we spent our 25th, just ask. No problem...ya mon!
Actually, you guys DO look very young to have been married 25 years. Congrats and here's a wish and prayer for another 25 years (and beyond).

I love the example you guys set for married couples. You deserved every bit of this escape and more. Just prayed for you and Laurie to have 25 more!
